JAPN 311: Social Issues In Japan
As the drive to rebuild modern Japan after WWII slowed, latent and new social problems have become visible. This course offers interdisciplinary perspectives on issues such as care of the elderly and homeless, equal treatment of minorities, gender and labor issues, domestic and world ecological concerns, and relevant institutions that promote or attack prejudice towards heterogeneous social groups. Taught in English. (Prereq: GE Areas A1 and A2 and A3 and B4 with a C- or better)
course narrative
In this course, we looked at past social issues in Japan, as well as some current ones as well. We had weekly reflections where we discussed readings we did, and had group discussions around them as well. We focused a lot of war time in Japan and the effects of the western military bases. We had a final research paper, where I researched escapism in Japan and how the recent surge of virtual reality and V-tubers can be connected to it. The paper can be found here.
